Here is some information about the Unit:
Seven Stars Primary SEN unit is for children in Key Stage 2 who have general learning difficulties and opened in September 2022 as part of the Local Authority wide project of developing SEN Units attached to mainstream schools.
All children who attend the Seven Stars Unit will have been previously assessed by professionals and the Local Authority and will have been issued with an Education, Health and Care Plan. The decisions regarding admissions are solely the responsibility of the Local Authority and the staff at Seven Stars are not part of the panel who makes the decision.
The criteria for admissions is as follows:

- have general learning difficulties
- likely be in Key Stage 2

Our aim for the SEN Unit at Seven Stars is to provide a supportive and nurturing educational experience to ensure they have opportunities to learn, socialise and be cared for alongside their peers. We strive to enable all children in the unit to achieve their full potential, learn crucial life skills, socialise with their peers during playtimes and access mainstream classes for subjects which they excel in.
Our curriculum will be designed to meet the individual needs of the children, including their Personalised Learning Goals, within the unit, and as a result, will change regularly. Where appropriate, the National Curriculum will be used to plan foundation subjects and science. The staff will assess the children in reading, writing, maths and PSED using PIVATs and will design learning opportunities to meet their targets based on these. Teachers and teaching assistants will use a range of differentiation strategies to ensure that all the children can access the curriculum. The curriculum will be enriched with educational visits, when appropriate to further enhance their educational experience.
The SEN unit provides a calm yet stimulating environment for the children to learn within. Communication is enhanced by the use of symbols, visual timetables etc to help the children with their communication skills and their understanding of the structure of the school day. The classroom is set up for the children to access continuous provision, play based learning, throughout the day in between accessing small group or individual work.
Working in Partnership
The SEN unit staff will work with a range of professionals who support parents, carers, families and support staff within the school to ensure all the children’s needs are met. These professionals may include: The School Nursing Service, Paediatricians, Speech and Language Therapy Service, LLC’s SEND Team and Parents/Carers.
Transition and Working with Families
Prior to any child starting at Seven Stars Unit, the Deputy Head Teacher/SENCO and/or the SEN Unit manager will endeavour to visit each child in their current setting, attend any meetings they are invited to, such as annual reviews and liaise with their current class teacher to ensure their needs will be fully met through transition. We will provide opportunities for parents to visit the unit once a place has been offered and agreed by the Local Authority to provide the parents and child with the opportunity to meet the staff, class team and other pupils if appropriate. Key information, achievements, celebrations and photos will be shared with parents and families via Class Dojo. Parents’ evenings and annual reviews will provide the opportunity for staff and families to work in partnership to ensure the child has the best possible chance of achieving their potential.
